A recent study has revealed a powerful protective effect of COVID vaccination for pregnant women, especially those at risk of preeclampsia. The study, led by José Villar, MD, MPH, MSc, found that COVID vaccination, particularly with a booster dose, significantly lowers the risk of preeclampsia, a potentially life-threatening condition for both mother and baby.
But here's where it gets controversial: the study also highlights the increased risk of preeclampsia associated with COVID-19 infection during pregnancy. With a 45% higher risk for vaccinated women and a staggering 78% for unvaccinated women, the numbers speak for themselves.

Deborah Money, CM, MD, a professor at the University of British Columbia, agrees. Her recent study in JAMA also found that COVID vaccination prior to and during pregnancy reduces the risk of severe maternal disease and preterm birth. "We saw significant protective effects with no adverse effects," she said. "It's a reassurance for patients and care providers that vaccination is not only safe but beneficial."
