A promising DC superhero movie, the 'Wonder Twins' flick, was unceremoniously axed, forcing its lead actress to confront a major career crossroads.
It's a tough pill to swallow when a project you're deeply invested in suddenly vanishes. For Isabel May, who was slated to portray Jayna in Warner Bros.'s planned 'Wonder Twins' movie for HBO Max, this became a reality. After four years of the film being shelved, May has opened up about the unexpected cancellation, sharing her candid thoughts with Entertainment Weekly.
"Most things fall apart, and you have to be okay with that," May reflected, emphasizing the resilience needed in the entertainment industry. "You have to be capable of just taking the punch on the chin, standing back up, walking forward, stepping into the next one.” This sentiment highlights the inherent unpredictability of show business, where even well-laid plans can be abruptly derailed.
May admitted that she wasn't initially deeply familiar with the DC universe. She was drawn to the project by its "really funny" script and the "creative team behind it." She also spoke fondly of her co-star, KJ Apa, who was set to play Zan. "I've worked with KJ since then. He was just a gem of a human, and I adore him,” she shared, hinting at a strong on-screen and off-screen chemistry that fans unfortunately won't get to see.
But here's where it gets a bit more concrete: While filming never commenced, May confirmed that the team did go through a costume fitting. Imagine the excitement of trying on your superhero suit, only to have the rug pulled out from under you! She recalled the swiftness of the cancellation: "You get flown out, you try on costumes, and suddenly, like a week after the announcement, you get a call from the director saying, ‘Well, David Zaslav is in power now and all of these things have shifted and he doesn't wanna do this film.’”
May expressed understanding for the business decisions, stating, “And, like, I get it. I get it. It's just the way that the business functions and it's all OK.” However, she candidly revealed the personal impact: “but you suddenly this thing you that was gonna be a part of your future for a certain amount of time is suddenly just not there. So now you have to reassess.” This forced reassessment is a significant aspect of an actor's career, especially when a major role evaporates.
And this is the part most people miss: The 'Wonder Twins' movie was officially put into development in February 2022, with Adam Sztykiel, known for 'Black Adam,' set to write and direct. May and Apa were cast in April, but the project was unceremoniously shelved by May of the same year. The rapid turnaround from casting to cancellation is quite striking.
Reports suggest that budget concerns played a significant role in the 'Wonder Twins' cancellation, as Warner Bros. Discovery aimed to pivot the DC brand in a new direction. This decision echoed the infamous cancellation of the 'Batgirl' movie, which had already completed filming and entered post-production in the same year.
