Get ready for a major traffic shake-up in Oldham, folks! A two-week closure of a key roundabout is about to cause some serious disruption. But here's the kicker: it's all for our safety and the smooth flow of gas supplies.
From January 5th to the 18th, the Big Lamp Roundabout will undergo some critical safety works by Cadent Gas Limited. This means four main roads will be partially or fully closed, impacting the flow of traffic in and out of Shaw.
Disruption Alert: Motorists, brace yourselves!
The closures are necessary to replace some of the oldest gas pipes in the area, some dating back over a century. Cadent Gas Ltd emphasizes the importance of this work for public safety and maintaining energy supplies to local homes and buildings.
A spokesperson for Cadent Gas Ltd explained, "We're replacing sections of pipelines that date back to around 1900. This includes the pipeline running across the roundabout, which we started replacing today."
Oldham Council, overseeing the highway closure, added, "Cadent is replacing the gas mains, which is expected to be completed by January 16th."
So, while this may cause some temporary inconvenience, it's all for the greater good. But here's where it gets controversial: do you think the benefits of these works outweigh the temporary disruption? And this is the part most people miss: how often do we consider the critical infrastructure work that keeps our energy supplies flowing?
What are your thoughts on this essential yet disruptive project? Let's discuss in the comments!
