Utah's Traffic Fatalities: A Mixed Bag of Progress and Concerns (2026)

Utah's roads have seen a significant improvement in safety, with a 5% decrease in traffic fatalities in 2025, marking the lowest number in six years. This achievement is particularly notable after the pandemic-related surge in fatalities from 2020 to 2021. However, the state still faces concerning trends that demand attention.

The preliminary report from Utah's transportation and public safety departments reveals a 5% decline in fatalities, with 264 lives lost on the roads. This is the lowest number since 2019, and if the final tally confirms this, the fatalities per vehicle mile traveled would be at their lowest since at least 2002. While these figures are encouraging, they also highlight the ongoing need for vigilance.

One positive trend is the decrease in pedestrian and cyclist deaths, as well as a significant reduction in alcohol- and drug-related fatalities and unrestrained vehicle deaths. These improvements are a result of increased safety measures and public awareness campaigns.

However, there are areas of concern. Motorcycle fatalities have seen a 32% increase in 2025, reaching a 15-year high. This trend is particularly alarming, and state experts are urging the public to take note. Additionally, teen deaths have also risen, with a 35% increase in fatalities among individuals aged 0-19, attributed to inexperience, distractions, and risky behaviors.

Despite these challenges, state troopers emphasize that these tragedies are preventable. By promoting focused, alert, and sober driving, as well as ensuring all passengers are buckled up, Utah can continue to make strides in road safety. The key is to maintain awareness and take proactive measures to prevent further loss of life.
